Integrate

Integrating the hardware into my product. What should I know?

We believe our technology has numerous applications in Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) from gesture control in cars, home appliances, industrial and medical environments to creating rich and immersive VR and AR experiences to location-based entertainment and experiences such as interactive posters and displays.

General Points

You should consider the form factor of the transducer board, power requirements, the size of your interaction space and portability of the application in your design. Any tracking device will need good line-of-sight to identify the hand clearly and without obstruction.

The ultrasound array itself should not be obstructed by any solid objects, while acoustic reflections should be considered when building the array into a confined space. For example, reflections from nearby, hard surfaces may have a detrimental effect on the acoustic field.

While sensations can be felt from 5cm from the array surface, the Ultrahaptics array works best at distances greater than 15cm and out to about 30° either side. You can read more about the array’s interaction zone here.

To protect from damage, dust and spillages the array should be covered with a suitable material. Remember to account for cabling and the location of the host computer.

Development Kits

While the STRATOS Explore Development Kit (USX), TOUCH Development Kit (UHDK5) and Evaluation Kit (UHEV1) are not designed as end-user products, they are well suited for integration into a demonstration or proof-of-concept application.

The STRATOS Explore Development Kit and TOUCH Development Kit can be removed from their frame and anchored using the four corner attachment holes. The Evaluation Kit can be mounted directly in a suitable solid structure, while accounting for heat dissipation and electrical contact. Note that if the relative position of the tracking device is changed, the new alignment will need to be accounted for in your software application.

In addition to the standard, square array form factors we provide the 24×8 rectangular array for TOUCH Development Kit. For the STRATOS Explore Development Kit or Evaluation Kit, please contact your Ultrahaptics sales representative to discuss your specific requirements.

NOTE: The Ultrahaptics STRATOS Inspire is a fully enclosed device and should not be dismantled. It features a VESA compatible mounting point.

Ventilation

Because of the nature of the transducers used by Ultrahaptics and the high output levels required, heat can build up on the surface of the transducer array, especially while outputting haptics. This is quite normal (our transducers are certified for use in automotive environments with temperatures between -25C and 85C), but suitable ventilation and heat dissipation will be needed if removing from the frame and building into an enclosure.

To protect from overheating the STRATOS Explore Development Kit and TOUCH Development Kit are designed to go into a transducer standby mode.

The logic board surface temperature threshold is 65C, while the transducer board has a threshold of 80C. In this state, the device will still appear and communicate with the host machine but will not output ultrasound. Normal operation will resume once the device has cooled by 5C below threshold.

The Ultrahaptics STRATOS Inspire is a fully enclosed device and has built in, active ventilation. The cooling vents should not be obstructed and cooling fins should have adequate space.
